When Sykes was about fives years old, his father was telling him about the past of his family. About all the glorious battles they had gone through and won all the famous things they did for their large family. He even mentioned that there was a single blood line of those wolves that was considered a warriors blood. He said to Sykes that those warriors had a special power, one that allowed them to use a special energy of a different element. But he told Sykes that there had only been four seen during the entire history. As Sykes' father was about to tell him more about the warriors blood line, a loud crash shook the entire house. As if by instinct both Sykes and his father leapt from their sitting places and rushed to the place where the explosion occurred.
As they neared the room, Sykes could hear a group of people that he had never heard before along with the smell of burning wood. With a sudden blast of an ear piercing sound, Sykes heard his mother scream like he'd never thought possible. With this terrifying sound occurring, Sykes was getting ready to run, but his father stopped him saying, "No Sykes, it's too dangerous. Who ever is in there has probably hurt your mother. She's most likely no longer with us." With Sykes hearing this, he struggled to get out of his fathers grip, but he was too young to break free. His father continued, "I'm not sure about your sister, but I don't want to lose you too. STAY HERE! No matter what, find your sister and get out!" With that note left for Sykes to take in, his father jumped over the flames to the room where his mother was.
By now the entire house was engulfed with thick, black smoke. Sykes had a difficult time getting through the house to find his sister. Suddenly, Sykes heard his sister, Liz, crying in fear. Without knowing why, he jumped right into the flames to head for his sisters room. Although he was burnt slightly, with his fur singed in some places, Sykes arrived at his sister’s room. Realizing that she was trapped in a small corner of her bed with no way of getting off without being seriously burnt, Sykes made a daring effort to save his sister. "But how?" he thought, wondering what he could do to save them both without either of them being harmed in any way. Without any time left to come up with a safer plan, he jumped onto her bed, causing her to bounce off the bed to a flameless area. But the cost of the jump was dear. Sykes' fur was ignited and he had no place to put it out.
Not caring about the extreme pain he was in, Sykes grabbed his sister’s arm and ran them both out of the house. After getting outside, Sykes fell to the ground and started rolling to put the flames out. Doing so, he noticed that his chest was very sore. As he tore off his shirt as well as he could, he saw that his chest had been burnt severely. As he made a little gel from the plants near his house to sooth the pain which his father and mother taught him, he wondered where his father was. Suddenly, both Sykes and Liz heard a terrible sound. The house was collapsing! He remembered what his father told him and he remained where he was with his sister. But with his sister being ever caring, she started screaming at Sykes to help her find their parents before they were killed by the flames. Sykes knew that his father trusted him to honor his word and held his sister saying, "It's too late... There both gone." With a giant sigh, Sykes started to droop and wobble until he collapsed from being exposed to the smoke too long.
Eventually the fire squad arrived and put out the flames while Sykes and his sister were rushed to the hospital. While there, Liz was treated for a few minor burns to her arms. But with Sykes being severely burnt on the chest, they said that the part of his chest would develop a blackish tint with any fur that grew there, if at all. After giving Sykes a lot of oxygen to help filter out the smoke that would damage his lungs, Sykes started to wake up. The doctor said, "You are very brave for one so young. But from now on, try to get out before the fire starts." With Sykes fully conscious, he asked the doctor if his father or mother had made it out of the flames. With a sad sounding sigh, he replied, "No... There were about three skeletons found in the remains of the fire. I'm sorry son..." With this in mind, Sykes was confused, heart-broken and scared. He was horrified at the fact that nobody would take care him and his sister.
When the social workers of the hospital asked who was the oldest of the two siblings, Sykes said that his sister Liz was by a year and a half. After that, they questioned his sister about any relatives that they had. She said, "I don't know of any relatives that are around here, or even alive." With this shocking answer, they asked Sykes what she meant since Liz told them that their father talked to Sykes the most. Sykes replied, "She's right. We have no relatives because we are the last of our kind. Our blood line has thinned out as our species mixed with others, producing hybrids of bizarre kinds." At this reply, the social workers were astonished at Sykes' knowledge, his large vocabulary, and his great skill of memorization.
Eventually, the social workers told Sykes and Liz that they would have to be adopted by a family or separate families. If they were adopted to different families, the social workers promised to do their best to make sure that they both got to see each other frequently with the permission of the families. But with a sad and gloomy day, Liz was adopted to a new family that lived clear across the planet. Realizing that the chances of seeing his sister every now and then was almost nigh, he became very depressed. His last family member, friend and loved one, ripped away from him at such a young age...
About two months after Liz was adopted off, a family came to see the young pup. Since his parent’s death and the departure of his only sister, by now Sykes was shy, depressed, and lonely and wouldn't speak to anybody. As the man and woman watched Sykes drawing, they looked over his shoulder and saw that his sketching was very sharp and precise for one at the age of five. The gruff looking man asked Sykes, "How're you young man?" Sykes remained silent. The man asked, "Did you draw that? My, that's very impressive for your age!" With Sykes being complimented on his art, Sykes let out a little "thanks" and continued drawing as if the man never spoke to him. As the woman pulled the man aside, she said, "I know he looks shy and closed up, but he's a sweet and caring child. Isn't that what we've been wanting?" With a nod of his head, the man walked back to Sykes and said, "Well, we're going to adopt you. So if you want to not address us as 'Mom and Dad', you can call me Carl and my wife Maria." Hearing this, Sykes twitched his ear showing Carl that he understood. "Well then, let's get you home, eh?" After Carl and Maria signed the papers and registration, Sykes was now theirs to take care of.
Now with his new 'family', Sykes ran up to what would be his room to get away from the people who were now his 'parents'. Although he was in the room to be alone, he couldn't help but notice the interesting room interior. The room was filled with antiques, old coins from many places, old jewelry, many giant dressers and an old box filled with toys. He presumed those were for him, but he wasn't interested. Instead, he put the box outside his door and closed it. He felt they were too childish since they were mostly toddler toys. But what really caught his eye was the rather large jewel that was in a glass case on a little wooden stand. It looked like a giant ruby of some sort, but it was too dark to be one. He went to open the case and picked up the gem. He was expecting it to be quite heavy for its size, but to his surprise, it was rather light. He noticed that there were a couple scratch marks on the bottom and a few scattered hairline marks on the top. He figured they were from rough handling. Then he noticed that the edge of the gem, the very side of it, had a rather large crown. He didn't know why, but something inside of him wanted him to keep it. But he knew better than to steal it, so he placed it back in the case exactly as he had found it. Making sure there weren't any finger prints on the gem or in the case, he closed the door and sat on his bed quickly because he heard foot steps approaching the door.
As Carl entered the room, he saw Sykes quickly sit on the bed. Sykes hadn't realized it, but he'd been caught dashing to sit and pretend he wasn't doing anything. Carl looked from where Sykes had run from and realized that this young pup had an eye for precious things. Carl walked over to the case and pulled out the gem, feeling that it was rather warm for sitting untouched for about 6 years. He sat next to Sykes and asked, "Do you know what this is Sykes?" Sykes shook his head to indicate that he didn't. Carl said, "This is a precious gem that was given to me by my great grandfather." Sykes looked up at him in wonder why he had something that was so old. Carl noticed the look in Sykes eyes and replied, "I kept this for so many years because I knew, one day I would give it to my son to keep with him. I always wanted to have a son, but your mot... I mean Maria, is very protective of her body and suggested that we adopt a young boy. And we did. We found you!"
After Sykes heard this, Sykes finally asked Carl, "Why did you choose me? Why not any of the other young kids that were more open and playful and benevolent?" Carl stared at Sykes due to him not knowing that a five year old could understand a word such as 'benevolent'. Carl answered, "We chose you because you were different from the rest. You were special. Something drove us to you. We don't know why, but we know that you'll be the best son to ever be known." At this statement, Sykes shifted in his bed as he turned somewhat from Carl while saying, "You just wanted me because I was quiet and wasn't very active, isn't it?" Carl, being hurt by this reply, he said, "No! Of course not! Your mot... I mean Maria and I both chose you because we loved you the most out of all the others! We didn't judge you, we were drawn to you! That's why we adopted you. Besides, you're smart enough to know what all this stuff is in here anyways. And some of it is for you!" At this generous comment, Sykes turned to Carl and fell into his arms bawling and whimpering, asking, "Why did they leave us?! Why wouldn't he let me help save her!?" Sykes breaks down, crying his eyes out. Since Carl was new at this parenting thing, he wasn't sure what to say to comfort Sykes. So he said, “I'm sorry Sykes. You were very brave to save your sister and to listen to your fathers words. If it were me, I would've run in and helped him. But if you did, you probably wouldn't be here."
At this, Sykes stared at Carl with his eyes filled with tears, asking, "How do you know all of that?" Carl started to speak, but was interrupted when Maria walked into the room. Maria answered Sykes saying, "We know of all that happened because the social worker told us, honey." Maria walks over and sits beside Sykes and hugs him. He asks both of them, "Who killed my parents?" With this difficult question, both Maria and Carl tried to explain without making it sound as bad as it was. Carl finally decided that Sykes would understand better if he told him straight out. He said, "Sykes, your parents were killed by a gang of thieves... They bombed the wall of your kitchen and yelled at your mother to give them all their valuables, but she didn't listen. So they shot her... That was the scream your dad and you must've heard." Sykes was silent and still, almost unliving as he heard this. Carl continued without looking at Sykes to see any sign of when to stop, saying, "Your father must've told you to run and find your sister and to get out while he tried to save your mom, but in the process of jumping into the burning kitchen, one of the thieves shot him in the chest. He struggled to give a fight, knocking out one of the thieves out cold." Sykes' eyes started to fill with more tears as he heard of his father being shot. "He tried to do the best he could to carry your mother out of the house as the thieves escaped with all your stuff, but he collapsed from the thick smoke and the loss of blood. He was, in my opinion, the greatest husband who ever lived." Carl shot a quick, almost hurt look at Maria as she said that. But Maria gave him a look that she meant it to not offend him.
After Maria left the room, Carl handed Sykes the large gem, saying, "Take good care of it. It was my greatest treasure until I married Maria, so I expect you to take extra special care of it. It's the only one in the world as well." Sykes asks, "What is it exactly?" Carl explains, "It was supposed to be an ancient relic from an old civilization that existed about 200 years ago in a deserted and exotic jungle. My great grandfather, Marcus Korvado the third, found it in what seemed to be an old, royal tomb. This civilization mainly consisted of wolven beings." This shocked Sykes as he grabbed his head in what appeared to be caused by a migraine. With this happening, Carl kinda freaked out and grabbed the young pup and held him close. Sykes didn't know why, but something inside of him said that the civilization Carl was speaking of was the same civilization he was a descendant of. After the pain went away, Sykes thanked Carl for caring about him and took the giant ruby like gem. Knowing that he made Sykes welcome and happy in his house, Carl left the room.
Three years later, Sykes started to feel more pain inside of his heart that was so longing to be with his sister and missing his parents. He suffered a dramatic weight loss as he couldn't eat without his real family so he decided that being with a fake family made him feel worse. So in the middle of the night, he packed all his belongings, pausing as he looked at the glass case that contained the giant gem. "Should I take it?" he thought. Hearing Carl get out of bed, Sykes quickly turned off the light and hid his bag under the bed and pretended to be sleeping. To his luck, Carl was just getting a glass of water from the bathroom and went back to bed. Making sure the coast was clear, he pulled out his bag and stuffed more of his stuff in it without remembering the gem. As he was about to leave the room, his head felt like it was hit by a sledge hammer and he turned towards the gem. Unsure why, but he felt he had to take it with him. After stuffing it in his bag, he headed down the stairs.
Remembering which steps were creaky and which weren't, he made it to the front door and was about to open it. But then he remembered that his mother always left a window open just a crack to let in a nice breeze. So he ran to the window in the kitchen and started to open it. "Cccrrreeeeeaaaaakkk!!!" The window made a loud noise which he knew for a fact would wake Carl and Maria up right away. But to his surprise, neither of them moved an inch in their bed. After searching for some cooking oil, he poured a little on each side of the window frame and tried it again. Without a sound, minus the little thump the window made hitting the top of the window frame; Sykes tossed his bag out the window. Then remembering he needed money and food, he grabbed a loaf of bread, some apples, a can of tuna fish, and a left over burger he had that evening and some money that was sitting on the counter, Sykes was all set to leave for good. But with his parents teaching him to be honest and trust worthy, he felt bad taking the money and food, so he put it all back.
Running for about a day or two, Sykes started to notice that his pace was slowing down a lot. Even though he was young and full of energy, he hadn't had a decent meal in months because he missed his family too much. So with the guts he had, he set up a trap to catch a little animal to eat. But with every attempt to catch one, he failed every time. He almost gave up on himself when he heard someone walking around the area he was in. Scared that it might be someone looking for him to take him back to Carl and Maria, he hid in the bushes near by. But it wasn't who he expected. Instead, it was a rather old looking feline who was carrying a sword on his back. Sykes was extremely curious as to why the old-timer had a sword with him. Unable to contain himself, he darted towards the old man. Not realizing it, Sykes was almost immediately caught by the neck by the old man. The rather annoyed looking cat asked, "Why did you try to attack me you good for nothing..." He stopped what he was saying as he noticed that the one whom he wrongly accused of trying to attack him was but a mere child. "What are you doing all the way out here?” Sykes replied, "I was just wondering, why are you carrying around a sword? Are you some kind of ninja or something?" The old cat chuckled, "No, I'm not a ninja. Sorry. But I am a master of Tai Chi." Sykes stared, confused, wondering what exactly Tai Chi was. The old cat saw his curiosity and started to tell the young wolf of his strange but impressive past.
"I once fought along side many great warriors. Many of which consisted of wolves, cats, even a fox if I'm not mistaken. But mostly wolves." Sykes was stunned at this remark which the old-timer had said. Now realizing, something was driving him to meet with different people who might know something about his blood lines past. Sykes was still curious what his father was going to tell him before the accident happened, but there was no way of finding out what it was. All the while Sykes was thinking to himself, the feline was studying Sykes for unknown reasons. Suddenly the cat lunged out a hand at Sykes, not meaning to harm him, but to test him. Sykes now seeing the hand coming at him at quick speeds, he caught it with his hands by instinct of self defense. Shocked at what he did, he quickly released the old cat’s hand. "I'm sorry! I didn't want you to hit me, so I stopped your hand. Did I do something wrong to be punished?" With caring eyes and full knowledge that this young wolf was exactly who he was looking for, the old-timer said, "I'm sorry. I forgot to introduce myself. I am Konito." "I'm Sykes, Nice to meet you." As the old man started walking, he nudged Sykes to follow him. "So, have you ever thought of learning more moves for self defense?" queried the Konito. Sykes looks up at him in awe, "Do you really mean it?" Konito replies, "Of course!” After agreeing to train with Konito, Sykes and Konito arrive at a run down house that's about 10 miles away from any city or town.
Sykes and Konito immediately start the training once they arrive. They were sort of sparring in a little corner of the room. A little while later, Sykes asks if he could take a break, but Konito said, “No, if you want to learn self defense, it’s best to learn it while you’re young.” To his surprise, Konito was knocked clear onto his back after he finished his sentence. To his surprise, Sykes had knocked him over without him even knowing it. “Can I take a break now?” Sykes asked with a little smirk on his face. Konito nodded in response while Sykes went to the kitchen of the house and got a glass of water. While Sykes was away, Konito got up, brushing off a little dirt that had gotten on his clothes. Thinking about Sykes speed and strength, he was even more curious as to what Sykes could do. Since Sykes was still in the kitchen, Konito went into his bedroom and pulled out a small box from underneath his bed. He opened it to make sure whatever was in there was in good condition.
Sykes walks out of the kitchen and notices that Konito is gone. “Hello?” Sykes calls out, hoping that he wasn’t abandoned by Konito. Konito slammed the little box shut quickly to make sure Sykes hadn’t seen what was in it. As he slipped the box into his pocket, Konito walks out of the room. With a slight smile on his face, Konito tells Sykes, “Do you know who you remind me of when I was your age?” Sykes replied, “You?” Konito laughed a little, “Yep. A little spunky kid with a lot of guts.” Sykes grinned at this compliment. “Sykes, I have something for you. I can sense a lot of anger and pain in you.” Konito claimed. Sykes looked up at him with curiosity as to how he knew he was going through a hard time. Sykes asked, “What is it?” With another small chuckle, Konito pulled out the little box. “This is a crystal that was given to me by my mother. She told me that whenever I got angry, to think about the good things that I’ve been through and to focus my happiness into the crystal.” Sykes was astonished at the magnificence of the small crystal. Sykes took it with the permission of Konito and put it on. To no surprise, Sykes didn’t feel any different. But he was grateful that a total stranger gave him a gift. “Now then, back to training!” yelled Konito.
About a few months later, Sykes had ranked very fast in his training. Konito was so proud of Sykes that he decided to give him something special. While Konito went to his bedroom, Sykes slumped in his chair because a strange feeling had started in him. He was terrified of what was happening to him, so he screamed. Hearing the scream, Konito ran to see what the matter was. Not seeing anything in the house, he ran to Sykes asking him, “What’s wrong? Are you in pain?” Sykes nodded very hard, and then suddenly went very still. Not breathing, suddenly Sykes body started to glow. He shined very brightly. Eventually, Konito had to shield his eyes for protection of blindness. Once the light went out, Konito saw Sykes lying on the floor unconscious. Terrified of what might happen if Sykes was dead, Konito started to slap Sykes’ face. Without any signs of waking up, Konito ran into the kitchen and got a large bowl of ice cold water and poured it on Sykes face. That woke him up in heart beat. Now conscious, Konito asked, “What on earth just happened?!” Sykes not knowing what happened either, Sykes said, “I don’t know… All I remember is an incredible pain, and then it was all blank.” Confused at this amazing site, Konito kept a close eye on Sykes. While unsure if it was safe or not, Konito knew it was the right thing to do.
Proceeding to give Sykes the long, tube shaped gift, Konito said to him, “This is very delicate and is not to be used as a real weapon of war. I want you to take extreme care of it. Understand?” Sykes, confused why he was receiving this strange gift, he nodded in agreement. Unwrapping the gift, Sykes’ jaw dropped as low as it could. Konito had given him a white colored Tai Chi sword of his own design. With its blade heat treated to become a whitish metal, and its white nylon corded handle, this was truly the greatest gift he had ever received. Noticing that the pommel had no designs but simple streaks from the center to the edges, he thought this must have been specially made for him. Gratefully accepting the sword, he started to pull the blade from its sheath. In the event of which the blade was drawn from the sheath, the sword started to glow as Sykes was focusing on the good time he was having. Konito noticing that Sykes wasn’t aware of the glowing aura around the blade, he thought to himself, “This young wolf has more of a secretive past then I thought… Maybe he’s… nah, he couldn’t be.” Wondering if it was even possible for Sykes to be the last descendant of the ancient wolven warriors, Konito asked Sykes what his father was talking to him about before the accident. Sykes looked at him and said, “He was talking about our past and how we were from an ancient civilization of wolven warriors and such, but all I can really remember was the chosen warriors that had special powers. Why do you ask?” Konito stood up slowly while saying, “You remember how I told you that you were glowing earlier?” Sykes said, “Yeah…” “I think you’re the last descendant of the chosen wolven warriors. The last element of the special powers.”
Sykes couldn’t believe what his ears were hearing. Him? The final warrior? How could that have happened if the warrior’s blood line had thinned out after all those decades? Deciding to believe Konito, Sykes asked if he could teach him to control his powers. Readily agreeing to train him some more, they spent the next five years training. During this time of training, Konito had been aggravated earlier one day before he started to train Sykes for that day. Once they started training, Sykes noticed that Konito was hitting harder and faster than normal. Missing a couple of blows to protect his left shoulder, each strike Konito hit Sykes’ arm, it made a deep but thin slash. By the time Konito noticed what was happening, Sykes was bleeding a lot. Bandaging the wounds, Konito noticed that he made somewhat of an “S” shape on Sykes’ shoulder. “I’m sorry Sykes; I don’t know what came over me…” Sykes shrugged and started to lick his wounds. But Konito grabbed his tongue and said, “No. Let these heal on their own.” After that incident, the training continued on for another five years.
Now, 18 years old, Sykes decides it’s time to leave. Thanking Konito for taking care of him for all those years, he departed on a quest of two goals. First was to find his sister. The second was to find what was driving him all across the planet.
